March in Destin: Things to Do and Local Tips

Visiting Destin, Florida in March? March is a great time to be on the Emerald Coast, and there are plenty of fun events to kick off the spring season.

This post covers what to expect for weather, sunsets, events, and activities during March in Destin.

March brings warmer weather and a noticeable increase in visitors compared to the quiet of February. Snowbirds begin heading home, and spring vacationers start arriving.

March through October is considered tourist season in Destin, while November through February is our off-season.

Late March and early April are typically the busiest weeks of spring since most school spring breaks fall during that time. Crowds usually ease slightly in mid-April and early May before picking up again for Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer.

In my article about the Best Times to visit Destin, I ranked March 9th on the list, ahead of December, January, and February. While it is not my personal favorite month, I do appreciate it as the start of spring and the transition out of winter.

Ranking the months was subjective and based on my own experience. A 9th-place spot does not make March a bad time to visit. There really is no bad time to be in Destin!

My lower ranking for March mostly reflects that it can still be a little chilly for swimming. It is also the month when we see the largest number of college-age visitors, compared to the family-focused crowd that dominates summer and fall.

Most condos and hotels in Destin and Miramar Beach require at least one guest to be 25 years old, so we do not experience the same type of spring break crowds as some other Florida destinations. There is also increased security on the harbor and beaches during March and early April to help keep everything running smoothly.

Overall, March is a great time to visit Destin. While the water may not be ideal for swimming, the month makes up for it with events, fireworks, and beautiful coastline sunsets that only happen for a short window in spring and fall. All of that is covered below.

March Events in Destin

March is when the Destin area starts to feel busy again after a slower winter. HarborWalk Village and the Village of Baytowne Wharf both host weekly spring break events during their busiest weeks in mid to late March and into early April. Exact dates and lineups change every year, so instead of a dated list, here’s an overview of the kinds of events you can typically expect — and be sure to check the venue calendars before you go.

One quick parking heads-up: HarborWalk Village charges for parking during the season, and the City of Destin lot across the street is usually a little cheaper. Don’t park in the nearby restaurant lots and walk over — tow trucks watch for that.

HarborWalk Village Spring Events

HarborWalk’s spring break series on Destin Harbor typically includes:

• Silent Disco Parties — grab a pair of headphones, choose your music channel, and dance along in front of the Main Stage.
• Family stage shows — themed shows like Under the Sea, with pirate and mermaid performers, magic, and live music for the kids.
• Fireworks and country concerts — Friday evenings often pair a country concert on the Main Stage with fireworks over the harbor.
• Saturday Socials — Saturday evenings with rotating themes and live entertainment right on the water.
• St. Paddy’s Day Family Party — family-friendly Irish-themed fun around St. Patrick’s Day, with music and drink specials at the harbor restaurants.
• Harbor in Bloom — a spring celebration welcoming the new season to the harbor.

Baytowne Wharf Spring Events

Over in Miramar Beach, the Village of Baytowne Wharf runs its own spring break series, typically including:

• Wednesday Night Concert Series — free concerts on the Events Plaza lawn, with a different band each week.
• Boomin’ Tuesdays — an evening of activities capped off with fireworks over the lagoon.
• THURDAZE Lights Show — a drone show that lights up the sky with images of favorite beach scenes.
• Movie Mondays — family movies on the lawn under the stars.
• Scallywag Sundays — a pirate show the kids love, with Captain Davy and his crew.
• Bubbly Baytowne — a free, adults-only sip-and-shop evening through the village shops.
• St. Paddy’s Day Delight — Baytowne paints the village green for St. Patrick’s Day, with live entertainment and merchant specials.

More March Events

Also watch for food festivals like the Destin Commons Mac & Cheese Festival, a family-friendly afternoon where local restaurants compete with their best takes on mac and cheese, guests taste and vote for their favorites, and the event supports a charitable cause.
