March 2026 in Destin: Things to Do and Local Tips

Visiting Destin, Florida in March? March is a great time to be on the Emerald Coast, and there are plenty of fun events to kick off the spring season.

This post covers what to expect for weather, sunsets, events, and activities during March in Destin.

March brings warmer weather and a noticeable increase in visitors compared to the quiet of February. Snowbirds begin heading home, and spring vacationers start arriving.

March through October is considered tourist season in Destin, while November through February is our off-season.

Late March and early April are typically the busiest weeks of spring since most school spring breaks fall during that time. Crowds usually ease slightly in mid-April and early May before picking up again for Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer.

In my article about the Best Times to visit Destin, I ranked March 9th on the list, ahead of December, January, and February. While it is not my personal favorite month, I do appreciate it as the start of spring and the transition out of winter.

Ranking the months was subjective and based on my own experience. A 9th-place spot does not make March a bad time to visit. There really is no bad time to be in Destin!

Families watching the fishing boats on Destin Harbor

My lower ranking for March mostly reflects that it can still be a little chilly for swimming. It is also the month when we see the largest number of college-age visitors, compared to the family-focused crowd that dominates summer and fall.

Most condos and hotels in Destin and Miramar Beach require at least one guest to be 25 years old, so we do not experience the same type of spring break crowds as some other Florida destinations. There is also increased security on the harbor and beaches during March and early April to help keep everything running smoothly.

Overall, March is a great time to visit Destin. While the water may not be ideal for swimming, the month makes up for it with events, fireworks, and beautiful coastline sunsets that only happen for a short window in spring and fall. All of that is covered below.

March Weather in Destin

March feels like a welcome shift from the inconsistent and cooler weather of January and February. It can still feel cold at times, especially if the sun is not out.

-Destin March Average High: 70°
-Destin March Average Low: 46°
-Destin March Average Gulf Water Temperature: 66°
-Destin March Average Rainfall: 5.8 inches

March days are usually warm and pleasant when the sun is shining but can feel cool in the evenings or on cloudy days.

Many visitors find the Gulf of Mexico too cold for swimming in March, although you will still see people getting in the water on warmer days.

There are typically plenty of sunny days for relaxing on the beach. If swimming is important to you, consider booking accommodations with a heated pool.

Most resorts with heated pools will still have the heater running in March when needed, but it is always best to call ahead and confirm.

I wrote an article here that will help you find the best pools in the Destin area: The Best Resort Pools in Destin, Florida.

March Sunsets in Destin

Daylight Saving Time begins in March, which means longer evenings and later sunsets.

During the first part of March, sunset is around 5:45 pm. After the time change, sunset shifts to between 6:50 pm and 7:05 pm for the rest of the month.

Sunsets are especially beautiful in March. Watching the sun dip below the horizon at the beach is something you should plan to do at least once during your visit.

Because our beaches face south, the sun sets over the Gulf during the winter months. March is the final month when you can see the sunset directly over the water from most beach locations until late September.

Below are maps showing the direction of the sunset throughout March. The direction will vary slightly depending on whether you are east or west of Destin due to the curve of the coastline. The red line shows sunset, and the blue line shows sunrise.

By late March, the sun begins setting slightly over land instead of fully over the water, as shown in the graphs above.

The Florida Panhandle is unique because many of our beaches face south, unlike most beaches in the U.S., which face either east or west. I wrote a more detailed article about sunsets in Destin here.

I use an app called SunCalc to find the exact direction of the sun on any specific day from a particular location. It is free and easy to use. PhotoPills is another option with more detailed features.

March Activities in Destin

Most water sports companies reopen in March after being closed for much of the winter.

Destin Harbor becomes busy again with fishing charters, dolphin cruises, Crab Island tours, and other seasonal businesses ready for spring visitors.

One of the first signs of spring in Destin is seeing the water taxi running on the harbor again, usually on March 1st.

If you are visiting Destin Harbor or staying nearby, the water taxi is an easy way to get between harbor destinations while enjoying time on the water.
