May is one of the best months to be in Destin. The first signs of summer start to appear with warmer weather, longer days, and kids finishing up the school year.
This post covers everything you need to know about what to expect in May in Destin, including weather, activities, crowds, and upcoming events.

In my article about the best times to visit Destin, I ranked May as 2nd on the list, just behind October.
It was honestly a tough call between October and May because in many ways May could take the top spot. They are very close in my mind.

The weather in May is similar to October, except May does not carry the same hurricane and tropical storm threats that become more common in the fall.
October ultimately wins for me because of signature events like the Destin Fishing Rodeo and the Seafood Festival.
I also love the fully bloomed sea oats across the beach landscape in the fall. Still, May is a very close second, especially considering the lower storm risk.
As far as crowds go, early May feels similar to late April. It’s that window between spring break and peak summer when there’s a slight dip in visitors. Crowds steadily increase as the month goes on and summer approaches.

Summer season officially begins on Memorial Day weekend, and that’s when the crowds increase significantly, even beyond spring break levels.
In 2026, Memorial Day weekend begins Friday, May 22. Expect a noticeable surge in visitors starting that weekend, with consistently busy conditions continuing through mid-August.
May Weather in Destin
Most days in May are sunny and warm, though early in the month there can still be a slight chill in the evenings. Overall, May weather is more reliable than March and April, which can still surprise us with the occasional cold snap.

By May, most people consider it warm enough to swim in the Gulf, especially on sunny afternoons. May also typically has the lowest rainfall of the year, which helps keep the water clearer and calmer since fewer storms are stirring things up offshore.
Average High = 83 degrees
Average Low = 61 degrees
Average Gulf Water Temperature = 77 degrees
Average Rainfall = 4.3 inches (lowest of the year)
May Sunsets in Destin
Sunsets in May fall between approximately 7:20pm and 7:45pm, depending on when you visit during the month. By May, the sun sets over land rather than directly over the water in Destin.

Because our beaches face south, the sun only sets directly over the Gulf during the winter months. Even so, May evenings often bring beautiful color to the sky after sunset.
March is the final month to see the sun set directly over the water from most Destin beaches until late September, when it gradually shifts back over the Gulf.
I wrote a more detailed article about sunsets in Destin here.
The photo below shows the sunset direction in May (red line is sunset, blue is sunrise) from Henderson Beach State Park in the center of Destin. As you can see, it sets completely over land this time of year.

If you’d like to catch a sunset directly over the water in May, you’ll need to head east toward 30A or Panama City Beach, where the curve of the coastline still allows for it.

You can use a free phone app called SunCalc to see the exact direction of the sun on any specific day from your location. PhotoPills is another option if you want more advanced features.
May Activities in Destin
All watersports companies are open and busy on Destin Harbor in May, so it’s a good idea to book activities in advance.
Fishing charter boats are especially active this time of year, and many begin offering two trips per day.
May is also when Crab Island starts to fill in as the water warms up and more people head out to swim and relax in the shallow areas. It won’t reach peak levels until Memorial Day weekend, but the activity definitely increases as the month goes on.
I wrote a detailed post about Crab Island in Destin here, including how to time your trip for the clearest water: Crab Island in Destin: The Ultimate Visitor Guide

The Destin Water Taxi typically runs its regular seven-day schedule in May. If you’re staying on or near the harbor, it’s an easy and scenic way to move between restaurants and activities.

For more detailed information about the water taxi, I wrote an article about it here: Destin Water Taxi ~ The Best Way to Travel the Harbor.
May Events in Destin
May is full of events and festivals to enjoy with the warmer weather. Below are some of the best events happening this month, listed in order of when they take place. (As always, double-check details before you go, since schedules can change.)
Tequila and Taco Festival at Baytowne Wharf
- Date: Saturday, May 16, 2026
- Time: 1:00–4:00 pm
- Cost: Varies
- Website for Tickets: Taco & Tequilia Tickets

Local restaurants and food trucks compete for “Best Taco on the Emerald Coast,” and you get a vote for the People’s Choice Award. The main event is on Saturday, with a few related events often happening on Friday and Sunday.
You can sample different tequilas and margaritas, including blancos, reposados, añejos, and mezcals, while working your way through some of the area’s best tacos. There’s usually a “tacos only” ticket option if you’d rather skip the alcohol samples.
Blessing of the Fleet on Destin Harbor
- Date: Thursday, May 14, 2026
- Time: 5:15 pm
- Cost: FREE
- Website: www.iacdestin/special-events/blessing-of-the-fleet.com
The Blessing of the Fleet is one of Destin’s longest-running traditions. The 2026 event is the 69th annual blessing, held on Destin Harbor on Ascension Day.

Local pastors gather on the dock at Fishing Fleet Marina in front of Brotula’s to bless charter fishing boats and other vessels whose crews make their living on the water. It’s a meaningful way to kick off the season, with wishes for safe passage and good catches.
A prayer service under the large tent typically happens before the blessing, and a fish fry follows. I wrote a detailed article with more photos, history, and the best places to watch here: Blessing of the Fleet on Destin Harbor
Lionfish Festival at Harborwalk Village

- Date: Saturday, May 16, 2026 – Sunday, May 17, 2026
- Time: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
- Cost: Varies
- Website for Info: Lionfish Festival official info
This festival is part education, part food-and-fun, and part “wow, that’s a lot of lionfish.” Florida declared the first Saturday after Mother’s Day as Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day back in 2015, and the festival helps spread the word about the lionfish invasion while celebrating the divers and teams helping control it.
It also lines up with a major lionfish tournament (the Emerald Coast Open), and the final weigh-in and awards are typically part of the weekend. Expect vendors, samples, and lots of chances to learn what makes lionfish such a problem and why removal efforts matter.
Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival at Fort Walton Beach Landing
- Date: May 15–18, 2026
- Time: Varies depending on day
- Cost: FREE
- Website for Info: https://www.billybowlegsfestival.com/
This is a long-running Fort Walton Beach tradition with pirate-themed fun, family activities, and plenty of reasons for kids to be very excited about grown-ups in pirate costumes. You’ll usually see a “pirate landing,” themed events downtown, and activities like scavenger hunts and kid-friendly pirate games.

Most years include live entertainment and a big community party vibe, plus a fireworks show downtown on one of the nights. Check the official schedule for the day-by-day details.

- Cost: FREE

Enjoy lawn games and dancing with DJ Mike Whitty in the Baytowne Events Plaza, then stick around for the fireworks show over the Lagoon at 9:15 pm.
Baytowne’s fireworks are one of my favorite shows in the area because they’re synced to music and you’ll usually see some fun, unique shapes.
I wrote a detailed article about the best viewing spots for the Baytowne Wharf fireworks (plus the schedule) here: Where to Watch the Baytowne Wharf Fireworks
Thursdaze Lights Show at Baytowne Wharf

- Time: 8:30 pm

This is a drone show over the lagoon, and it’s genuinely something different for the area. Expect an aerial light display that blends tech with coastal-themed images and a “how are they doing that?” feeling from the crowd.

Watch the night sky light up over the Gulf with your family and friends. You can make it a dinner-and-a-show from any of The Boardwalk’s restaurants, or spread out on the beach to watch the fireworks launch from the pier. You can also walk partway out on the pier if you want a closer view.

For more ideas on where to watch (plus parking tips), check out my detailed post here: Where to Watch the Okaloosa Island Boardwalk Fireworks
Fat Tuesday Parade at Harborwalk Village
Harborwalk usually brings Mardi Gras energy into the summer with a weekly Fat Tuesday-style night that includes live music and a parade through the village. The 2026 details have not been officially confirmed yet, so consider this one TBA for now. I’ll update it as soon as Harborwalk posts the official schedule.

All American Thursdays and Fireworks at Harborwalk Village
- Date: Thursdays starting May 28, 2026 (continuing through summer)
- Time: 9:00 pm
- Cost: FREE

Harborwalk typically does a weekly patriotic-themed night with live entertainment and fireworks at 9pm. In past years there has been an additional Monday night show as well, but that has not been confirmed yet. I’ll update this as soon as it’s official.

Hello! I’m planning a bachelorette party (ages late 20’s/early 30’s) and I’m looking for a fun, relaxed bar/restaurant to go out on a Saturday night in May. We would LOVE to find somewhere with karaoke. Any suggestions? Thank you!
The only Saturday night karaoke before Memorial Day is at Fubar on Okaloosa Island. It’s a laid back pizza restaurant/bar. Indoor/outdoor. Fun spot and great karaoke place. It usually starts about 9pm or so. Rum Runners piano bar in Baytowne Wharf is also a fun spot for a party. Lots of bachelorette parties go there. Pianos start at 8pm and that’s a really good time. You can also walk to other spots in the Village. I hope that helps. Have fun!
