Tonight I had the opportunity to shoot the Destin Harbor fireworks from the Harborwalk Village zip line and free fall tower. They don’t allow anyone on the tower unless they are jumping off the free fall or going on the zip line (I had permission because I was taking pictures for Harborwalk) but if you time your activities right, you can see the fireworks from up there too. It’s quite a view! This article is a collection of the photos I took from up there.
The Harborwalk Zip Line and Free Fall is a suggested activity in my tourist guide book, The Ultimate Destin Bucket List ~ 100 Must-do Activities in the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.
I climbed up on the tower about an hour before the fireworks and started taking pictures of the view and of people going off the zip line. The Harborwalk zip line is a 1000′ round trip ride that starts and ends at this east tower which stands 103′ tall.
The halfway point of the zip line attraction is the 65′ tall west tower in front of Margaritaville near the entrance to Harborwalk Village. This is also the location of the rock climbing wall and the Harborwalk Adventures ticket office.
There was a steady flow of people going off the zip line but after a little while, someone came up for the free fall. He was a young kid and didn’t even hesitate before jumping off the platform. Kids are so brave!
I felt uneasy just looking over the edge to the landing platform below.
The fireworks started at 9pm and there were several people up there who paused to enjoy the sight of them. It was incredible. What a cool view to see while zip lining or jumping off the free fall.
Here is a video I shot of a short clip of the fireworks finale from the tower. Continue reading for more information about the activities from up here.
I didn’t think that being up there would make me want to jump off the free fall but after seeing a few people jump, I decided I definitely wanted to. I couldn’t do it that night because I had all my camera gear but I looked forward to trying both the free fall and the zip line soon.
UPDATE: I jumped off the free fall tower with my friend and wrote about it in this post.
How much do the Harborwalk Adventures activities cost?
Can we go side-by-side on the Harborwalk Zip Line?
Yes! There are two zip line ropes and if there are 2 attendants working they will let you and a friend go side-by side.
Is the Harborwalk Free Fall a hard landing?
The Free Fall is assisted by a fan so it is a controlled jump that slows you down further once you get close to the ground. The landing is soft and easy.
After the fireworks I watched all the boats coming back into the harbor. I took some long exposure photos with light trails from the moving boats and a few still shots showing all the boats going by. I will never forget this view!
Would you ever jump off the Zip Line or Free Fall Tower?
