Everyone knows the essential beach items to to bring (towel, umbrella, sunscreen, book, chair, etc…) but here is a list of my favorite, not so obvious, items that will bring your perfect beach day to the next level.
Floaty Anchors
I’m sure we have all had the experience of relaxing in a floating chair out in the ocean yet finding ourselves drifting down the beach (or worse, out to sea) due to the waves and currents. This is definitely the biggest challenge with using inflatable floats at the beach. You have to spend too much time trying to stay in one spot when you are trying to relax. After dealing with this frustration for many years, I decided to look for a creative solution.
These are the best floaty anchors I have found. You just fill them with sand or rocks once you get out to the beach and then attach them to your floaty. Now just relax and enjoy bobbing around in the waves without drifting from your spot!
Before finding these awesome float anchors, I used an empty gallon water jug that I filled with sand and attached to my ocean floaty with a bungee cord. This is a great DIY anchor solution as long as you have the space in your bags for the jugs and the patience to get the sand in the small opening.
I also use this float anchor as a kayak anchor or a paddle board anchor when I go to Crab Island in Destin. It’s a great way to relax and swim without the kayak drifting away.
Ocean Float
This is the floating chair I use. It’s the best float for the ocean I have found. They are one of the least expensive ones out there and work really well for ocean lounging. They let you sit upright so you can see everything going on around you and they also have a cup holder and a handle that is perfect for an anchor.
Those beach floats don’t have the best reviews but I honestly don’t know why. I have several and have never had an issue. If you buy a different one, just make sure there is a handle or hook of some sort for the float anchor.
Here is another one that I am considering trying yet but I haven’t yet. I like that the chairs can hook together and there is a handle for the anchor.
Umbrella Anchor
I see a lot of people get out to the beach with their umbrella and attempt to dig a hole in order to secure it. Not only does this make the umbrella a little too low, but it is anything but secure if there is even the slightest amount of wind.
An umbrella anchor is the perfect solution. Twist it into the sand and secure your umbrella in it. This is the one I use and it’s awesome. My umbrella never flies away even in strong winds.
Sand Cup Holders
I can’t believe I survived so long without these. I hate sand in my drinks but it always manages to get in them. These are the perfect solution. I know a lot of chairs have cup holders but they are usually too small and somewhat flimsy to safely hold a drink. These work perfect.
Beach Towel Clips
It’s so frustrating to put your towel on the chair and it keeps falling down or blowing away. These clips keep it perfectly secured. They also come in lots of different colors and styles.
Full Face Mask
I recommend a full face mask for swimming at the beach. It’s really fun to stand facing the ocean waves and let them crash right on you while keeping your eyes open and not having to hold your nose. Diving into the waves with a mask on and your eyes open is also really fun.
This also allows you to swim around underneath the water and look for fish. Any mask will do but the one I use is frameless so it’s really comfortable and allows for panoramic viewing under water. I am a scuba diver also and I have actually come to like this mask better than my more expensive ones for diving.
Lighted Frisbee
This might be the most fun you will have on your beach vacation. Trust me on this one. Go out to the beach at night after sunset for a game of lighted Frisbee. This is way more fun than a regular game of frisbee and it’s not as hot at night so you can play longer. Plus there are no innocent people nearby that you have to worry about hitting with your Frisbee.
For added fun, have everyone wear glow necklaces so you can better see who you are throwing the Frisbee to. There is sometimes enough light from the moon or nearby buildings to still be able to play effectively without the glow necklaces but they make it more fun.
Of course, you can have an awesome day at the beach without any of this stuff, unless you’re a total perfectionist like me! What are your favorite beach necessities?

These are great tips! are you allowed to have floaties in the water at Destin beaches? I have heard they’re not allowed. Im going there in Sept and would love to have floaties!
I like how you mentioned that umbrellas and towels are essential beach day items. My wife and I need to get some beach towels for our beach day that we are planning so that we don’t have to lay down directly on the sand. It might be a good idea for us to find something that we can use to anchor the towels so that they don’t get blown away either.
Thank you! I’ve searched forever for these answers I didn’t know I hadn
I’m glad!
Yes, anchors are always a good idea 🙂
Yes they are definitely allowed!
I am from Chicago and am trying to find a beach and/or pool that will allow personal floating loungers. Do you know of anywhere between IL and including Destin?
Thank in advance for any answer you may provide.
Everywhere here in Destin allows them as far as I know but I’m not sure about other beaches
