Every Wednesday from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Okaloosa Island Boardwalk and Pier host one of the best Fireworks shows in our area. With all the other activities that the Boardwalk has to offer, this is a great place to spend a Wednesday evening. In this post, I will share some of the photos from my last visit and offer suggestions for spending a day here.
In addition to a beautiful beach, the Boardwalk also has a playground area, volleyball courts, retail shops, and an assortment of restaurants; many offering amazing panoramic views. I recommend getting here in the afternoon to enjoy a beach day before dinner and fireworks.
What I love most about this beach is the absence of rows and rows of condo beach chairs and umbrellas like you will find at many Gulf Coast and Destin beach areas. Combined with the convenience of having the Pier and the Boardwalk, it’s a clear winner for a beach day if you want to have several things to do in one place.
The restaurants with the best beach views are The Crab Trap and Rockin’ Tacos as they are both on an elevated level with outdoor seating and panoramic beach views. Rockin’ Tacos is also one of the highest rated restaurants in Fort Walton Beach on Trip Advisor.
Other restaurants here on the ground level include Floyd’s Shrimp House, The Black Pearl Island Grill, and Al’s Beach Club Burger Bar. Al’s has an indoor/outdoor open air feel with a large bar, plenty of tables and a large stage with live music from 5-9pm.
After dinner is the perfect time for a walk on the pier as the sun sets around 7:45pm in the summer. The views of the beach are beautiful from the pier and you might even spot turtles or dolphins from up there.
Currently, the cost to walk the pier is $2. Make sure to get a hand stamp if you plan to leave and come back later.
The pier is a great place to see the sunset during the summer months when the sun is setting north of us and the most beautiful color in the sky will usually be looking back towards the beach.
If you have some time after sunset before settling down in your fireworks spot, this is a good time to check out some live music and have a drink at Al’s. The entire front of the restaurant is open to the beach so it’s a great place to hang out while still enjoying the beach views.
The fireworks will go off at the end of the pier at 9:00pm. Below are some photos I have taken from different places around the Boardwalk that might help you pick the best spot. To be as close as possible, the pier will be the best choice. It’s quite an experience from out there. Walk as far as they will let you go (past the lifeguard stand) and it will feel like they are raining on you!
Either side of the pier on the beach are also good spots to watch from.
Pretty much anywhere on the Boardwalk is a good view.
Most of the restaurants will also have a stunning view if you want to enjoy drinks or a late dinner for the show.
Here is a time-lapse video I shot showing the sunset fading to night and finishing with the fireworks at the end.
